What is the Church? Well, according to the Bible, it is the
"Pillar and Foundation of Truth". It is the mystical body of Christ
and as such it is the force that the Gates of Hell cannot withstand,
saving souls from the Father of Lies.
When did it start? You probably know how the Holy Spirit came at
Pentecost, and how early believers met together, devoting themselves
to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of
bread and to prayer. Apostles and evangelists went from city to
city, establishing local churches that were part of a larger Body.
And it was at Antioch that they were first called Christians.
Where did that church go? It never left! For nearly 2,000 years,
as changing philosophies and outright heresies have led people to
believe they can shape the church, Holy Orthodoxy continues to
understand that it is the Church that shapes people. The Orthodox
Church may seem different, and perhaps even out of step with the
modern times. But as the Truth doesn't change, neither does it's
Foundation and Pillar. As Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday,
today, and forever, so is His Bride.
Theology should not be used to arbitrarily portray one's
individual faith. Because it is ecclesially (Church) oriented, it is
the Church's. and Holy Tradition is not merely historical continuity
or rootedness. It is the context in which the Church lives out Her
divine life and carries out Her divine mission. Tradition is, to use
Vladimir Losskys phrase, the Life of the Holy Spirit in the Church.
Orthodox do not say, “my opinion is” or “I think”. Instead we say,
"the Church teaches..."
